The overriding mission of Blacksburg United for Responsible Growth (BURG) is to promote the development of commercial activity in Blacksburg in a way that enhances the town’s distinctive character, maintains the integrity of its neighborhoods, and promotes environmental sustainability. We support measures that improve the viability of locally-owned businesses, encourage pedestrian-friendly development, help revitalize Blacksburg’s downtown, limit sprawl, and preserve open spaces.

In pursuit of our mission, we are dedicated to the short-term goals of holding developers of the South Main commercial area to their commitment to a small-scale, mixed-use development, and preventing the placement of a Walmart Supercenter or other “big box” store on the site.

BURG includes all residents of Blacksburg willing to join us in this mission.  We are an all-volunteer organization.
