With the receipt of this letter from Richmond, it is now official, our case is going to the Virginia Supreme Court! This is truly a turning point in our efforts, a clear sign that we were right to stand up to Fairmount Properties and their benefactor, the largest company in the world. We (everyone who has taken part in our fight) were right in our refusal to accept a bait and switch that would have damaged the quality of life in Blacksburg.
But the road to Richmond is a long one, and we don't expect this case to be resolved before Spring of 2009. We need to remain focused on the work ahead.
The Steering Committee of Blacksburg United for Responsible Growth is calling all our members and supporters to an open Community Meeting, Sunday, Sept. 21, at 7 PM, in the Blacksburg Public Library.
On the agenda:
- The ruling of the Supreme Court panel: what does it mean?
- A step-by-step preview of the Supreme Court process; what to expect and when
- A detailed presentation of BURG's financial situation, and a new fundraising push
- We need new energy on the BURG steering committee; please come if you have the energy and committment to work with us and would like to join the committee
- Upcoming community issues that the citizens of Blacksburg need to know about:
- The North Main transportation project
- The proposed housing project on Harding Ave.
- The fate of the Old Middle School
- A new effort to get Virginia Tech to pay its fair share of the town meals tax
Please help get the word out to anyone interested in stopping the Wal-Mart, and in keeping Blacksburg special as it grows.
